Hideki Matsuyama was described by some of his teammates as a Japanese sensation, leader, master and great golfer. The version that everybody on the International Team truly hopes will show up at the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club starting on Thursday is assassin.

The International Team, led by a wild 7&6 win from Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im, swept the Americans in Friday’s foursomes matches. That marked the International Team’s first win in an alternate shot match session since 2005 and it was the first time that there have been back-to-back sweeps in either a Presidents Cup or a Ryder Cup.

Heading into the 2024 edition of the Presidents Cup, the International Team would like to end a long period of US domination and are looking at Japanese superstar Hideki Matsuyama to set the trend at Montreal.

Judging the performance of a player at an event like the Presidents Cup can be slightly tricky, in part because it's such a small sample size, and in part because results often depend so much on both playing partners and opponents.

The PGA Tour noted that eight Presidents Cup matches have ended in 13 holes or fewer. The most recent to achieve the feat prior to Friday: Cantlay and Schauffele, ironically enough, who beat Matsuyama and Adam Scott 6&5 in Thursday foursomes in 2022.
