Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) withdrew from President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general race, pledging to champion Trump’s “America First” agenda in the Senate and focus on Missouri’s interests.

As President-elect Donald Trump continued to add names to his incoming administration Monday, U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt said his name won’t be one of them.

Tarkio, whose district includes Lincoln County, reportedly in running as possible pick by President-elect Donald Trump to be the next U.S. transportation secretary.

Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) said Monday that he has withdrawn his name from consideration to be attorney general under the next Trump administration. The big picture: The Trump ally opted to stay in the Senate and "be a champion" for the president-elect.

Senator Eric Schmitt served as Missouri’s attorney general before being elected to the U.S. Senate. And he will not pursue the AG title for President-elect Donald Trump. Schmitt, a Republican, posted to social media on Monday that he has requested the Trump transition team to remove his name from consideration for attorney general.
